I’ve talked about how you can build massive traffic using Twitter in my previous posts before. In this article, I elaborate on more detailed techniques to build up your Twitter followers which translates indirectly to more website or blog traffic.
Here are some methods you can use to help build your Twitter following.
(ideas thanks to Blogging Guru John Chow)
1. Follow Users Who Will Follow You Back
There are tons of Twitter users out there who will auto follow anyone who follows them. How do you find these users? A tell tale sign is by checking their Twitter home page. If the number they follow is about the same as the number following them, chances are these users will follow anyone who follow them.
2. Be Interesting To Follow
Most people use Twitter to keep up with friends and family. If you wish to build a following beyond that, then you will need to make more interesting tweets.
“Being interesting also means interacting with your followers.”
If they send you a question or direct message, you should answer it. You’ll be amazed by the amount interaction Twitter creates.
3. Branding Branding Branding
The first thing you should do when you set up a Twitter account is to upload your photo. Having your photo in your tweet puts a face to it and makes you connect more with your followers. And do put a real photo! Not some funny cartoon character or wierd logo.
Another thing you should consider is adding a custom background to your Twitter home page. It should serve to promote your website or blog address to increase chances of followers visiting your website or blog.
4. Get To Know The Hashtag
One way to to get new like-minded followers is by taking advantage of the hashtag to give your tweets more exposure.
Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They’re like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag.
You can use a service like Twitscoop to find out what the hot topics are and join in. If people like what you’re saying, chances are they’ll follow you.
5. Add Your Recent Tweets To Your Blog
The more exposure you have for your tweets, the higher the chances that people will follow you. If you have a blog, you should definitely take advantage of it by showing your tweets on the sidebar. The Twitter Tools Wordpress Plugin by Alex King will pull your tweets into your blog and
create new tweets on blog posts and from within WordPress.
While were on the subject of blogs, you should also links to your Twitter account and the Twitter counter button as well (hopefully, it doesnt show a zero). Another thing you can do is use a plugin like WordPress Affiliate Pro to turn any word with Twitter in it into a link to your Twitter account.
6. Give Your Followers Some Love
Rewarding followers is a great way to get more followers. SitePoint did this by offering a free 200+ page eBook on CSS if you follow them. They use Tweet Later to direct message the URL of the ebook
download to the new followers. Using this method, SitePoint was able to
acquired over 13,000 followers in only a week.
Ok, thanks John for some great ideas to use Twitter.

First of all, I’ll follow you, if you follow me. That will be the montra for many people. If you sing up for the free auto follow tool you won’t have to trust them to do it.
Anyway, good tip on Twitscoop and hashtags. It actually works.
