Why is tracking blog or website traffic statistics so important?

You will get a much clearer picture of your blogging efforts when you know exact performance figures such as the total number of daily unique visitors to your blog, repeat visitors, page views, which countries your visitors are coming from, which search engine keywords did your visitors find your site with and many more.

These traffic statistics not only allow you to see how your blog is performing on a day to day basis, it also helps you know how to tweek your blog so that you can increase your traffic even more.

How can I start tracking my blog or website traffic for free?

I use 2 main ways to track traffic to my blog and website.

1) StatCounter - A free yet reliable invisible web tracker, highly configurable hit counter and real-time detailed web stats. Insert a simple piece of our code on your web page or blog and you will be able to analyse and monitor all the visitors to your website in real-time!

*      Free, Fast, Responsive, Quick loading and Reliable Service.
*      Invisible Tracking – no ads on your website.
*      Accurate real-time website statistics with detailed visitor tracking and analysis.

2) Wordpress Traffic Statistics Plugin

Wordpress provides a simple plugin that integrates a blog traffic statistics tracking service into your Wordpress blog dashboard. You can see simple statistics like your total number of daily visitors, your most read articles, your most popular links and many more.

I use this so that i can cross reference the statistics with StatCounter, just in case either one has some discrepancies.

Hey Dennis how does Stat Counter fair against Google Analytics because Analytics is pretty thorough.. and I use Analytics all the time and I was wondering from your perspective which one you thought was better..

    Hi Alexander,

Google Analytics is a great tool for analysing traffic on your website. However, i personally feel that it is a more advanced traffic statistics tool for beginners to get used to quickly and easily.

Compared with Google Analytics, Statcounter is really very easy to use and the stats are pretty straightforward. That’s why i prefer to use it.

However, in terms of advanced functionalities, Google Analytics is really the best. You can read this forum thread on Statcounter’s forums where users had a good discussion about Google Analytics VS StatCounter, http://forum.statcounter.com/vb/showthread.php?t=27572

    Enjoy!
